Tolerance and Intolerance.
In this society, that we all live in, we often wonder how we are supposed to treat people who disagree with our beliefs.
In this society, that we all live in, we often wonder how we are supposed to treat people who disagree with our beliefs. Venerable Fulton Sheen said "There is no other subject on which the average mind in so much confused as the subject of tolerance and intolerance... Tolerance applies only to persons but never to principles. Intolerance applies only to principles but never to persons."
As devout Catholics, our vocation is to love everyone. Jesus Himself tells us to love even our enemies. To love everyone, we have to tolerate the person on the other side of the argument. We have to tolerate them and love them so that we can follow Christ's example. We DO NOT tolerate the principles to which they stand by because we know what is good and what is bad, what is just and unjust, what is true and what is false. If you ever wonder about what we as Catholics believe, ask your parish priest or look it up in the catechism!
A very controversial topic in our world is LGBT etc. The people who think that these genders and different couples are natural are confused and need our love more than anyone else. We do not tolerate the principles of what they believe but we do not have to tolerate the principles in order to love the people.
So if you ever encounter an atheist, a pro-choicer, a lesbian, a Catholic hater, you name it, show them love every chance you get but stay strong in your beliefs and do not waver if confronted.
