The Little Things
As our world steps down from all the engagements, the parties, the church services, and all the big events in our lives, we are left with the small, the quiet, and the details in our lives that were left in the cracks. We can't get away from our families, we have nothing exciting to look forward to, we have ourselves, our homes, and each other ... from a distance. Suddenly we are living a simple life. Jesus lived a simple life. The greatest saints lived simple lives. Jesus himself said, "go and sell all you own and give it to the poor." Comparing this quote to now might seem like a stretch at first, but once you realize that we have given away -or have had taken from us in this case - the riches of social life, the wealth of public gatherings, or the blessings of a hug or handshake. We are experiencing immaterial poverty. All of the big things are gone and here we are with the tiny sprouts of simplicity. Here we are one step closer to living a life like Jesus, or Mother Teresa, because we are experiencing poverty from lack of human contact. We are experiencing the poverty of the absence of the Eucharist. So maybe all this is Jesus saying "come child, come and be more like me." Or maybe this is Jesus saying "I want you to learn how to sacrifice like I did." Maybe there is a whole lot more going on here than just Lysol and masks. Maybe this is a wake-up call for us to learn some unknown details about ourselves. Maybe this is a chance to bond with a little sibling. Maybe this is our first exposure to the simplicity Jesus calls us to live. As Christians, we are called to find joy in all aspects of our life. So let us rejoice for the Lord is risen and he uses all things to bring us closer to eternal life with him.
