The Army of God
Updated: Mar 21, 2020
Like I said before, I recently read the Screwtape Letters by C. S. Lewis, and I went to share some other things about that book.
In one of the letters, Screwtape is describing the Army of God, writing, " The Church as we see her is spread out through all time and space and rooted in eternity, as terrible as an army with banners. That I confess is a spectacle that makes our boldest tempters uneasy." Then, later on the book Wormwood is confused because there is a sort of cloud around the patient that he cannot get through. Screwtape describes this cloud to Wormwood. "The asphyxiating cloud which prevented your attacking the patient of the walk back to the old mill is a well known phenomenon. It is the enemies most barbarous weapon and generally appears when he is directly present to the patient under certain modes not yet fully classified. Some humans are permanently surrounded by this cloud and therefore inexcusable to us."
so the first part of this is always reassuring. Knowing how terrified the devil really is of God. But the second part goes a bit deeper. If the Devil is afraid of God and God is directly present on our lives, won't he be scared of us too? I think he would. Furthermore, Screwtape describes the state humans are in when God is directly present on their lives as having an impenetrable cloud surrounding them. This cloud is God. It is his army. It is God in our lives. It is our way to truly ward of the devil. If we carry out what God wants to the fullest extent, no power of evil will truly be able to affect us. We will be permanently surrounded in that impenetrable shield of God and his heavenly Hosts.
